Experienced Missouri Attorney to fight for your Professional license
The State of Missouri requires many professionals to be licensed in order to work and to earn a living in a chosen career. If you are a physician, nurse, pharmacist, psychologist or other licensed professional, and you are being investigated by a state board, or under threat of discipline, do not face the threat of discipline and the risk of losing your license without having an experienced attorney to defend you and protect your rights through every step of the process. Your chosen career and your ability to earn a living are too important to risk facing disciplinary action alone.
Our attorneys at Carson and Coil have experience representing numerous professionals before Missouri's state boards and the Administrative Hearing Commission. They can often help to dismiss or minimize disciplinary action taken against a licensed professional. An attorney will work closely with you to refute allegations made in complaints and help protect your livelihood. Allegations made against licensed professionals that could result in disciplinary action include:
- Drug or alcohol impairment
- Criminal convictions
- Incompetence or negligence
- Fraud or false reporting
- Violation of laws or regulations governing your profession
- Mistreatment of patients/clients
- Improper record keeping
Carson & Coil attorneys work on your behalf to respond to complaints and help minimize the risk of severe discipline against your license.

The License Discipline Process
The fact that a complaint has been made against you does not mean that a Missouri state board will automatically impose discipline. Generally, a complaint triggers an initial investigation. You will likely be asked to respond in writing to the complaint. You may also be asked to voluntarily appear before the professional board for an "informal hearing" to answer questions and respond to allegations. While these informal hearings may seem innocuous, they are often used as a means to gather evidence to be used against you in formal disciplinary actions. You have the right to be represented by an attorney at these informal hearings and you should be certain to do so by hiring an experienced attorney at the earliest opportunity.
If the state board believes there is cause to discipline your license, it may seek to resolve the case through a settlement agreement with you or it may file a formal Complaint with the Administrative Hearing Commission ("AHC"). If action is brought against you with the AHC, your case will be set for an evidentiary hearing very similar to a court trial. At the hearing, the state board will have the burden to prove that cause to discipline your license exists. If the AHC finds there is cause for discipline, your case will generally then be referred back to the state board for a determination of what discipline to impose. You may also appeal an adverse decision of the AHC or the licensing entity to the Circuit Court.
